How Gilroy Businesses Rank Higher on Google Maps

How Gilroy businesses rank higher on Google Maps, five levers, Growth Inbound blog cover

In a city the size of Gilroy, it can feel like the same handful of businesses have owned the Google Maps results forever. That makes the map feel fixed, like the top three spots were handed out once and never reshuffled. They weren’t. Rankings move when businesses work on the things Google actually measures, and plenty of competitors in a smaller market aren’t working on them very hard.

This guide covers the five levers that move a Gilroy clinic or small business up the map, what the evidence says about each one, and the order we’d pull them in.

Key takeaways

  • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and it says you can’t pay for a better map position.
  • The top factors in Whitespark’s 2026 expert survey were primary category, proximity, keywords in the business name, a physical address in the searched city, and being open at the time of the search.
  • Only 7% of consumers don’t expect a reply to their review (BrightLocal, 2025).
  • Local pages, consistent citations and a fast site round out the list.

How does Google rank businesses on the map?

Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher. Prominence is how well known you are, including links to your site and your reviews. Google also says: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.”

To see how those three play out in practice, the most cited source is Whitespark’s Local Search Ranking Factors report. The 2026 edition surveyed 47 local search experts on 187 factors (Whitespark). Its top five factors for map rankings were:

  1. Primary Business Profile category
  2. Proximity of the address to the person searching
  3. Keywords in the business name on the profile
  4. A physical address in the city being searched
  5. Being open at the time of the search

Some of those you can control. Some you can’t. The five levers below focus on what you can.

Lever 1: Your Google Business Profile

Most of Whitespark’s top five factors come straight from your Business Profile, so start there.

Choose the right primary category

Primary category was the single strongest factor in the survey. Google’s guidelines say to “use as few categories as possible” and to choose the most specific one that describes what your business is (Google guidelines). A dental office should pick the most specific dental category that fits, not a generic health one. Check what the top three competitors in Gilroy use for the searches you care about.

Leave the name alone

Keywords in the business name ranked third, which tempts people to rename their profile “Gilroy Family Dentist Best Cleanings.” Google says adding unnecessary information to the name “isn’t permitted, and could result in the suspension of your Business Profile.” If your real, registered name already includes a keyword, great. If not, don’t invent one.

Keep your hours honest and complete

Being open at the time of search made the top five. Whitespark’s report describes businesses sitting at number one while open, then starting to drop off about an hour before closing. You can’t game that, but you can make sure your hours are accurate, including extended evenings or Saturday hours if you have them. Google’s guidelines ask for your regular customer-facing hours.

About the address factor

A physical address in the city of the search ranked fourth. If your clinic is in Gilroy, you have a natural edge for Gilroy searches. If you’re just outside town, you’ll usually do better targeting the city where you’re located and earning Gilroy visibility through reviews, pages and links, rather than listing an address you don’t actually operate from.

Lever 2: Reviews and replies

Reviews feed prominence. Google says “positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out.” BrightLocal’s 2025 consumer survey found that only 7% of consumers don’t expect a business to respond to reviews, and 63% expect a response within about two or three days to a week (BrightLocal).

A simple routine works better than a big push once a year:

  • Ask every satisfied customer, in person, right after the visit.
  • Make it easy with a direct review link or a QR code at the front desk, which Google itself suggests (Google review guidance).
  • Never offer discounts or gifts for reviews. Google treats incentives as fake and misleading content and prohibits them.
  • Reply to each review within a few days. For clinics, never confirm in a reply that someone is a patient or mention their treatment.

Lever 3: Local pages on your website

Your website feeds relevance. Whitespark counts on-page signals among the major factor groups, and Google reads your site to understand what you offer.

For a Gilroy business, that means one clear page per core service, written for the people who actually search for it. Each page should explain what the service is, who it’s for, what it costs or where pricing starts, and what happens next. Mention Gilroy naturally, such as where you’re located or which nearby areas you serve. Link each page from the matching service on your Business Profile.

This is where most small businesses fall short. A single services page with a bulleted list gives Google nothing to match a specific search against. Our AI-powered local SEO for clinics and small businesses spends much of its effort here, because it’s usually the biggest gap.

Lever 4: Citations and local links

Citations are listings of your name, address and phone number on other sites, like directories and industry listings. In Whitespark’s survey they carry less weight than profile, review and on-page signals. Their main job is consistency. If your old address or phone number is still out there, fix it, then move on.

Links from real local sources count toward prominence, since Google lists links to your website as part of how it judges how well known you are. For a Gilroy business, think chamber of commerce membership, sponsoring a school or community event, local news coverage, or partnerships with nearby businesses that link to you. A few real local links usually beat dozens of random directory entries.

Lever 5: Site speed and mobile experience

Speed isn’t a direct map ranking factor in Whitespark’s top five, but it affects both your website’s search visibility and what happens after someone taps through. Google states that “Core Web Vitals are used by our ranking systems” (Google Search Central). Its targets are a Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less (web.dev).

If your site loads slowly on a phone, some of the visitors your map ranking earns will leave before they call. Run your homepage and your top service page through Google’s free PageSpeed Insights and fix what it flags on mobile first.

Where to start

If you only have a few hours this month, do these in order:

  1. Fix your primary category, hours and business details on your profile.
  2. Start asking for reviews and reply to every existing one.
  3. Build a proper page for your single most valuable service.
  4. Correct any wrong addresses or phone numbers you find online.
  5. Test your site speed on mobile and fix the biggest issue.

Every market moves at a different pace, and nobody can promise a specific spot by a specific date. But steady work on these five levers is what moves businesses up the map over time. For how we approach the local market, see our page on marketing for Gilroy clinics.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps in Gilroy?

It depends on how competitive your category is and where you start. Profile fixes can show results within weeks. Review and content work usually takes a few months to build. Google bases rankings on relevance, distance and prominence, and says you can’t pay to speed it up.

Does my business need to be in Gilroy to rank there?

It helps. Whitespark’s 2026 survey ranked a physical address in the searched city as the fourth most important map factor. Businesses nearby can still earn visibility through strong reviews, pages and links, but they shouldn’t list a fake address to get it.

Are directory listings still worth doing?

Yes, but mainly for accuracy. Whitespark’s survey gives citations less weight than your profile, reviews and website content. Make sure your name, address and phone number are correct on the main listings, then put your time into reviews and pages.
